Regresamos al mes de Mayo en el 2014 en el que comparto con vosotros momentos con artistas que son luz través de su arte y pasión. 

Su nombre es Andres Levin, un cantautor & productor nacido en Venezuela con vibras buenas que ha contribuido mucho a la industria musical como la creación del grupo Yerba Buena con la hermosa Cucu Diamantes. Me gustan porque sus líricas son capaces de hacerte sonreír y pensar a la vez que estas bailando el ritmo.

En el 2013 la Venezolana, Gabriela Isler fue coronada como Miss Universo y la verdad es que es una persona tan bonita por dentro como lo es por fuera. Al conocerla me encontré con un ser amable y humilde con quien hablé sobre moda y la situación que aun lamentamos de Venezuela que sigue bajo la dictadura de Nicolas Maduro.

La cantante Cucu Diamantes es una persona que da energía de paz, amor, aceptación y tomar riesgos–todo a la misma vez. Hablar con ella es como hablar con una amiga que tienes mucho tiempo sin ver pero igual parece que el tiempo no ha pasado.  

Si aun no has escuchado su disco Cuculand, te lo recomiendo que hay mucho para bailar. 

In a flashback to May of 2014 I share some insightful moments with not only artists but doers, movers and shakers that work hard everyday to to bring forth a little light in the world with their knowledge and passion. 

Venezuelan born Andres Levin is a song writer and producer and all around cool dude. He’s done a lot for the industry but one of my favorite things is that he put together this band called Yerba Buena along with Cucu Diamantes. They have a sound with clever lyrics that make you think and smile as you sing a long and of course shake more than your tail feather because the music is that good. 

In 2013 Gabriela Isler won the title of Miss Universe on behalf of her native Venezuela. It’s a cliché to say but she really is beautiful inside in out. When I met her as Miss Universe she was super humble and very sweet. We talked fashion and Venezuelan politics but to much dismay Venezuela is still under the dictating rule of Nicolas Maduro. The country has been hurting for way too long now but by visiting Venezuela Live Aid you can learn more on what’s going on and how you can make a difference. 

Cuban singer Cucu Diamantes radiates an energy of peace, love, acceptance and taking chances all at once. Talking with her is like talking to a girlfriend that you hadn’t seen in way too long yet it seems as if time hasn’t gone by.

Bionica: You are quite dapper today!

Andres Levin: Thank you. 

Bionica: You’re wearing bright prink with navy blue pants. What inspired you to choose this look for today?

Andres Levin: I’m sort of known for dressing a little differently and I just love color. I’m wearing clothes by my designer friend Duncan Quinn. And you know, black tie, we’re on stage and we’re bringing a little bit of color and difference to the gala so why not wear something different you know? 

Bionica: So you’re going to sing for us today?

Andres Levin: Yes! Well today, Cucu (the Chair) and I’m Co-Chair along with a very interesting group from Nueva Gente, New York. The idea is to mix some art with music. Cucu will sing through out the night, not just at the end when there will be a great concert which will include songs from Yerba Buena which we haven’t played in a while and songs from her new album. She will be debuting a new song called Pecado de Picasso (Picasso’s Sin) which is inspired by the sprit of art in New York and this opportunity that we have to take part in it. 

Bionica: As a musician, you know the importance of art. How did art influence you growing up?

Andres Levin: Well, I am the son of artists. My parents first taught me about music and art before teaching me how to tie a tie, this is something I learned much after (pointing to tie). I know of nothing that exists without art. It’s the purest thing in the world, the grand mystery that moves our day to day. 

Gabriela Isler: For today’s look I wanted something conservative that would represent me, my personality at the same time and I loved this because it’s modest and sexy at the same time. It has the lace sleeves, open back… I’m always trying to add a little color with jewelry and I think the hair and makeup can give a more youthful look and it was perfect for tonight. 

Bioncia: What’s your favorite piece to

wear, for example are you more into skirts, pants… What defines Gabriela Isler when she goes out? What is it that says ‘this is Gabriela’?

Gabriela Isler: I think it’s hard to single out a single item, I think it all comes down to style as a whole. I’m a classic, modest woman, the kind that thinks that less is more and is prettier. So define me, I would say something very classic, it could be a white shirt with a pair of jeans or a nice handbag or accessories and that’s it. 

Bionica: Do you have a favorite designer?

Gabriela Isler: There’s a few. I’m from Venezuela and I love the designers from my country. I love Angel Sanchez, I love Carolina Herrera–they are very classic in their style. 

Bionca: I love Venezuela too! What can you tell me about everything that is going on right now?

Gabriela Isler: Well I’ve never been one to stay quiet about what’s going on and have always raised my voice for my country. I’ve taken advantage of my platform to raise awareness and to also ask my fellow countrymen to respect and recognize each other. It’s more than a political problem, it’s more than an economic problem, it’s a social problem in that has to do with the acceptance of ideologies, the acceptance of different ways of thinking. And so I’m hurt and sad because these are my brothers, my family, 30 million Venezuelans and we’re all suffering just the same. I just moved here about 6 months ago but my family is still there and so it hurts but I’m blessed to be able to raise my voice and I’m going to keep doing it. 

Bionica: First off, you are looking radiant tonight! You look like a doll. 

Cucu Diamantes: Oh yes!! (excited)

Bionica: How did you pick out what to wear tonight, for such an important event?

Cucu Diamantes

Cucu Diamantes: I always like to find vintage pieces, it’s a tradition of mine so that I’m always wearing something different than another person at the gala because there is always this possibility to wear the same outfit if a designer sends you pieces that have also been sent to someone else…I also think that everything has already been done and it’s a human thing to reinvent ourselves from what has already been created. This vintage piece doesn’t even have a tag with the designer’s name on it. Danny Santiago a friend and great stylist lent it to me, he’s responsible for Sex & The City. He had it in his warehouse and he told me I have something fabulous for you and he brought this out, I tried it on and I didn’t have to pick anything. It was like, that’s what you’re going to wear in the evening. 

Jackie: It was heaven sent. 

Bionica: It’s very pretty. 

Cucu Diamantes: It’s also spring that started a little late. 

Bionica: You’re going to be singing with Yerba Buena tonight.

Cucu Diamantes: Yes.

Bionica: What can we expect tonight?

Cucu Diamantes: Well my song Pecado de Picasso will premiere tonight and it has to do with all of the sculptures by Ray Smith that are adorning the gala as well as his candelabras. 

Bionica: Does this mean that we can expect an album from Cucu sometime soon?

Cucu Diamantes: Yes, yes. It’s already in the production process. And my independent movie Amor Cronico will be out this summer. 

Bionica: Can you sing a little bit of Amor Cronico, it’s one of my favorite songs. 

Cucu Diamantes: Forgotten in your rhyme, in your calm, in your craziness. Makes me stop, makes me go. I get lost and am found… 

Maicol Superstar

 Pues hice la entrevista. Le pregunté a Maicol Superstar un par de cosas, las contesto y fue bien. Pero después seguimos hablando y aprendí que él es loco cono su hija, le gusta escuchar los Orishas–música diferente para la mente creativa. También tiene un amor especial para las culturas diferentes y considera Mexico como su segunda casa. Cuando te tratan bien es lo que pasa. Maicol es tremenda persona y podemos aprender mucho de el. Tiene un tatuaje con el símbolo de ➤'play' para darle 'play' a la vida. Excelente!

I did the interview. I asked Maicol Superstar some questions, he answered and it was good. But then we just kept on talking and I learned that he loves his daughter, he listens to the Orishas–different music is good for creativity. He also has an appreciation for different cultures and considers Mexico to be his second home. Good hospitality. A great person all around that has a lot offer. He has a ➤ 'play' button tattoo to hit 'play' on life. How cool is that?!

Bionica: Maicol Superstar!
Maicol Superstar: Yes.
Bionica: Out of all the countries that you have visited, which one is your favorite and why?
Maicol Superstar: I really don't have a preference. I really like Italy, I really like Spain, Ecuador. I like Mexico, it's my second home. I'm fascinated by Colombia, Santo Domingo is something else…You know, everyone has it's own flavor and it's something really great that they are able to support what's ours.
Bionica: What do you miss most when you go away?
Maicol Superstar: In reality my bed, it's the best
Bionica: What's the weirdest thing that you have seen at a club?
Maicol Superstar: Wow, I've seen a lot of weird things. It really depends on what you consider weird
Bionica: Once, when I first started going to clubs, a DJ asked 'whose are these?' and he was referring to some silicone.
Maicol Superstar: Ok…wow–wow. Well I can tell you, something weird that happened to me at a club was when I fell off stage after dancing kind of crazy. You know I was the joke of the evening.
Bionica: Is there something that you have to do overtime before going on stage, some sort of ritual?
Maicol Superstar: You know, I always talk with the man upstairs and I ask Him to stay with me–it's worked well so far.
Bionica: What do you like most about going up on stage?
Maicol Superstar: That I can say what I want with out having to expect anything. I say what I want, when I want, because I want to say it. If you like it good and if you didn't, well I said it because I wanted to.
Bionica: And can you do the Maicol Superstar (y puedes hacer el Maicol Superstar?)
Maicol Superstar: How does it go?
Bionica: The way you do it Maicol Superstar.
Maicol Superstar: Maicol Superstar in the house!

Maicol Superstar: You know, I remember when I started in the 90s. I had a beeper and in Carolina there some singers (including me) and in Bayamón there were others. Bayamón is a town in Puerto Rico. And Ivy Queen would tell me 'I love you so much. We're here for whatever you need.' I would reply to her saying 'My love, we're here for you too.'
We always had a special love and affection for each other you know. From that moment to today, 2018, you were able to see how our queen still has that same love for us. That makes me proud because it means that what we planted is still there, it's alive. I'm very proud of the queen and how it all went down tonight. Kisses, Ivy baby this is for you Muah!!!

Bionica: You have a son and a daughter?
Maicol Superstar: I only have a daughter.
Bionica: I would love to be able to go into my dad's closet and pick things out, but his style is very different from mine.
Maicol Superstar: I have a daughter and she's the apple of my eye, she's the light of my life and right now I'm here because of her.
Bionica: That's beautiful (que hermoso)
Does she like your music too? A little?
Maicol Superstar: Well, she really isn't into it because since she can remember, she's always seen this as my job. And so it's simply her dad's work. Now she does like this one and the other, so as not to mention any names…But she doesn't get involved with my work you know.
She gives me my space and really respects what I do because through it she is who she is. Because of my job, she's able to study at a university, she has her own car. She's a very smart young lady. I'm really proud of her.
Bionica: Has she gone to work with you? For example to the recording studio?
Maicol Superstar: No, I've invited her but she tells me 'no dad, I don't want to.' She won't go. She doesn't really like to get involved in those things but she does know new artists and she's hang out with some of them although I may not like too much, but that's how it is with young people, you know.
Bionica: You don't really like it because as a dad you're being very careful with her?
Maicol Superstar: Of course, always. And when I don't like something, she knows that aside from being her dad, I'm her friend and no other person is going to tell her things the way that I will.
Bionica: What is she studying?
Maicol Superstar: Well right now, she's studying photography. She has a great camera that she made me buy. She has a lot of distant shots and she'll go in a red room (dark room), take the camera, take the picture, put it in water, take her time…She likes it, she really likes it.
Bionica: What has been your biggest challenge as a dad?
Maicol Superstar: Well it's not easy making a baby. A lot of kids now a days think that it's a joke and it's not. It's a life. It's much more than life itself. You're bringing life into this world and the same way that you need life, this life that you bringing in to this world, this life will always need as well. So really think that one thing is one thing and another is life you know. They have to…I don't know if you follow...
Bionica: Yes of course.

Se llama Ranking Stone y es conocido como El Rey de los Melones pero en verdad creo que debe ser conocido por su voz que en las palabras de Romeo So Nasty! Pues lo puedo escuchar el día entero.

His name is Ranking Stone and he's known as the King of the Melons but really he should be known for that seductive voice, he's like the Puerto Rican Barry White. I can hear talk all day.

Fan: Ranking!

Ranking Stone: What's going on? How are you?
Fan: You sand Los Melones! I'm happy that you sang it. Very good, very good.

Bionica: Well, for starters, Ranking Stone the King of the Melons, but with that voice–did you ever think about working as an announcer? You just speak so beautifully.
Ranking Stone: Well, I did study broadcasting before getting into music although music has always been a part of my life because I come from a family of musicians that have always played in bands. My grandparents were troubadours. During Christmas in Puerto Rico we were always the ones who did the Parranda (wassailing) and what not bus aside from that I did study broadcasting. But after I finished my studies, I dedicated myself more to music although I had done all of the news practices, commercial announcing…but I just left it at that. Many people have told me that, but, well I stayed in the path of music.
Bionica: You can tell me that I'm ugly, that my hair is a mess and it will still sound good because Ranking Stone said it.
Ranking Stone: No, no, no, you're beautiful. Everyone is having a good time here.
Bionica: But with that voice…
Ranking Stone: You're hair is beautiful. (Sexy voice on!!)
Bionica: I love it!! (Me encanta)
Ranking Stone: And some spectacular eyes!
Bionica: Thank you.
Ranking Stone: See, see chuckles.
Bionica: Aside from reggaeton, what is your favorite type of music?
Ranking Stone: Well, check this out, I really like merengue. Merengue by Grupo Mania, Elvis Crespo. I'm also a salsa lover. I like all genres of music but especially the Latino ones. In regards to rap, hip-hop and the like, I like some but have always had a preference to the latin rhythms. The rhythms that have also instructed me into putting together my songs.
My style is a little different than others and it's because of what I like.
What I really like is Latin music.
Bionica: What do you enjoy most about working with your friends?
Ranking Stone: Well um chuckles it's a group of humble people above everything. The old school crowd, well we're somewhat seasoned. We enjoy life, we enjoy what we do and we have a lot of passion. For example, DJ Nelson, right now we're here doing this recording and he's around somewhere jumping, dancing, having fun… DJ Negro too!
You know, we're a little older in age in comparison to the kids that are starting out now, but we enjoy life and the truth is that we enjoy what we do. It's the passion that moves us.
Bionica: What's the best advice that you have ever received that you still adhere to today.
Ranking Stone: Well, my grandparents had always told me to keep my feet on the ground. Humility is the best thing one can have and I think that it's something that has always been a trait of mine. I've always been humble and it's what I've always taken with me and I've tried to stay on that route doing all things with a humble heart and a lot of respect. It's a bit of advice that has lasted me forever.

He's a dad, he's a husband, he's a cook and also a hard working man that made sure to make his mark and stand out–he's DJ Negro!!! Pioneer of that old school movement that has helped shape reggaeton into what it is today.

El es padre, un esposo, chef esquisto, un hombre luchador que trabajó duro para sobresalir–el es DJ Negro!!! Pionero de la vieja guardia, ese movimiento clave que ha influido lo que es reggaeton hoy en dia.

Bionica: DJ Negro, what is it that you like most about your job?
DJ Negro: What I enjoy most about my job?Seeing people enjoy what I do. Me at the turntables, preparing the music, getting people pumped and then you see how they dance, they sing… It's kind of like when you make rice & beans or whatever it is that you're eating and you prepared this meal that's really good. You set the table and then nobody eats and you say to yourself 'Wow, after I spent all this time making it…' You know, its satisfying to see people having a good time as a result of what your doing.
Bionica: If you weren't a DJ, what would you be?
DJ Negro: A cook.
Bionica: Si? Yeah?
DJ Negro: Because I love being in the kitchen.
Todo Latin Network: Food is great.
Bionica: What's your specialty?
DJ Negro: Lasagna.
Bionica: Really?
DJ Negro: I love lasagna.
Bionica: OMG
DJ Negro: Listen, for your information, I graduated as a chef. I've got my certification and everything, and I'm also quite good. And if it's bad, then I really won't make it at home, my wife will make it laughs.
Bionica: Do you have kids?
DJ Negro: Yes, I have 3 kids.
Bionica: What is it that your kids like the most, about their dad being DJ Negro?
DJ Negro: Well, I already have 2 adolescents. My son is 25 and my daughter is 23. They don't always say it, but every once in a while I'll hear 'Papi, I met this person and when they found you're my dad they went crazy' laughs. When they were kids, they didn't really listen to reggaeton, they were more into rock and the like. They didn't really keep tabs on me in that sense, but now that they're older and have seen what their dad has done, they say 'Wow.'
Bionica: What's something that you always try to teach your kids.
DJ Negro: Well, I tell them they shouldn't smoke, they shouldn't be dealers and that they should try to do things legally. It's worked up to now.
Todo Latin Network: What does a legend like you say to the new generation that wants to DJ? What advice do you have for them?
DJ Negro: Well, when I started in '83, I'm going to tell you this story that happened to me. I couldn't DJ for the life of me. I had never even touched the turntables but I felt that I knew how to do what the DJ was doing and I remember this DJ from the town I was born in, La Perla San Juan. I told him 'Listen, let me play something, I know how to do it' and this is what he said to me '#@$% off and don't bother me' and I told him 'I'm going to learn and I'm going to beat you at your own game.' I ran into him some 10 years after that while I was  DJing and he tells me 'S@!* DJ Negro let me play something' and I asked him 'Do you remember what you told? #@$% off? Now it's your turn to #@$% off' laughs
But really, my advice is to keep going. Perseverance is your tool to show others that yes you can do it.

Shine

Todo comenzó con el son de una conga que mantuvo al Barrio en la ciudad de Nueva York unido tras el cambio inevitable. El reencuentro de 2 hermanos con motivos distintos para el Barrio que los vio crecer. ¿Será o no será? Hay que ver para saber! Bajo la dirección de Anthony Nardolillo, la película Shine te cautiva al corazón y a la vez te incita a bailar al compás del Barrio.
El mes pasado tuve el honor de asistir el Premier de la pelicula y conversar con los actores. Comparto con vosotros lo que me contaron. 

Sandra decidió dejar su trabajo para dedicarse totalmente a la producción de esta película. No obstante, su empleador le dijo que al terminar la película, la esperaban con los brazos abiertos. Cosas que pasan cuando amas lo que haces y lo haces con amor .
Sandra decided to leave her full time job so that she could work as a full-time producer on Shine. Her employer told her that she would still have her job even after the movie. This is what happens when you love what you do, others see it too and appreciate you all the more for it.

Bionica: Sandra Varona, como fue para ti producir esta película que muestra el papel de la mujer en una manera tan positiva, especialmente en Hollywood?
Sandra Varona: Fue tremenda oportunidad trabajar con Tony y estoy feliz de que él me permite apoderar a la mujer dando les trabajo en posiciones claves. Nuestra diseñadora de producción es mujer, la estilista es mujer. Tenemos mujeres que forman parte del equipo para la construcción del set de la película entonces es muy importante darle trabajo & ayudar a Latinas constantemente. Estoy mas que contenta de que el me da luz verde para hacer lo que quiero. Y por supuesto, como Latina me gusta darle trabajo a la minoría, pero no sólo Latinas, sino Afro Americanas y Asiáticas. Minorías en general.
Bionica: Eso es estupendo. Ahora dime que consejo le das a esas jovencitas que te admiran y quisieran ser como tu. Que pueden hacer ellas para entrar al mundo de producción?
Sandra Varona: Bueno, hay muchas maneras. Yo empece muy jovencita. Tenia como 17 años y en verdad trabajaba mucho como voluntaria. Iba a trabajar para cada festival de cine posible & también trabajaba para las compañías de producción como voluntaria. Hice el esfuerzo de trabajar todas las horas que podía para aprender todo sobre la industria y conocí a mucha gente. Hoy en día, las personas que entrenaron conmigo están produciendo para programas de televisión, para Telemundo…Nos hemos ayudado el uno con el otro a desarrollarnos mas. Pero todo empezó con el trabajo de voluntaria.
Bionica: Qué es lo que mas te gusta de la producción?
Sandra Varona: Me parece que es como construir un rompe cabezas y obviamente no todas las piezas van bien juntas entonces siento que cada proyecto es como un rompe cabezas para mi. Me pongo a pensar en quien seria la persona ideal para formar parte de cierto equipo porque también tengo que pensar en su personalidad… Siempre estoy pensando en quien puedo conectar con quien para que todo funcione. Eso es lo que amo, conectar a las personas.

Bionica: ¿Qué es lo que mas te gusta de haber trabajado en la película Shine?
Kimberli Flores: Dios mío, es que podemos celebrar la cultura Boricua. Especialmente en estos momentos que han sido tan difíciles para nuestras familias.
La película tiene que mucho NY y como la ciudad ha sentido la influencia de los  Latinos y ha sido cambiada por la cultura Latina. Hemos querido celebrar todo eso y asegurarnos que las personas recuerden que aunque hayan cambios, aquí estamos y hemos hecho un impacto.
Bionica: ¿Cómo esta tu familia en Puerto Rico? Se que ha sido algo difícil ponerse en contacto por aya.
Kimberli Flores: Lamentablemente, hasta ahora no sabemos nada. Mi familia esta en Aguadilla, pero nos mantenemos fuertes y con positivismo. Han sido unos días fuertes, pero parece que la gente esta manteniendo el buen humor. Estamos orando y mantenemos la esperanza de que nos llamen pronto diciendo que están bien. Pero sabes algo, nosotros resistimos mucho! Somos fuertes! Hay que agradecer que estamos bendecidos y seguir positivos. Pienso que necesitan esa energía buena.

Nuyorican Buadilio Rivera bailarin & instructor del arte–lo que mas ama…

Baudilio Rivera: Mi nombre es Baudilio Rivera, nacido aqui en NY pero mi familia es de Puerto Rico. Soy Nuyorican.
Bionica: ¿Cómo está tu familia?
Baudilio Rivera: Hasta ahora mi familia esta bien. Mi familia en Santurce esta bien, aun no he hablado con mis familiares en Aguadilla & Ponce. Espero poder hablar con ellos hoy.
He sido bailarín por mas de 20 años y he trabajado como instructor por 15, bailando en NY y el mundo entero. He tenido el privilegio & la oportunidad de bailar con unas personas increíbles y talentosas–no solo en la película, pero en mi carrera.
Resulta que muchas de las personas con quienes he trabajado también forman parte de la película. Es una bendición que a la vez me tiene algo impaciente, esperando ver el fruto de tanto esfuerzo. He vivido algo muy humildemente hermoso siendo parte de este proyecto.
Estoy aquí tomando en cuenta todo lo que veo, lo que escucho y el olor de las palomitas de maíz, viendo como todos sonríen y sintiendo esa energía. Me siento internamente emocionado, sudando externamente, pero estoy bien.
Bionica: ¿Qué es lo que mas te gusta bailar? ¿Cuál es tu canción favorita para bailar?
Baudilio Rivera: Me encanta James Brown y Superbad es mi canción favorita para bailar.
Bionica: ¿Eres el único bailarín en tu familia?
Baudilio Rivera: No–mi mamá fue mi primera maestra de baile. Ella vino apoyarme hoy. Es mi dance mom que me ha acompañado en los ensayos, se ha quedado hasta tarde conmigo para después levantarse temprano, llevando a Dios sabe donde…Ha sido la persona que mas me apoyado.
Bionica: ¿Qué es lo que mas te gusta de ser maestro de baile?
Baudilio Rivera: Es cumplir mi propósito de llevar a las personas a un mejor lugar del que las encontré. El baile es producto de eso. Tiene que ver con la manera que las energías se alinean, con las personas que llegan con el corazón, el alma y la mente abierta y me dejan llenarlos. Trato de darles todo lo que puede y aveces me paso y vuelven por mas. Me parece un proceso increíble al tener esa conexión. Es algo que no tiene limites y es hermoso.

Lyrik Cruz: Mi nombre es Lyrik Cruz. Soy el instructor principal de baile para la película y también bailo en ella. Save the Last Dance fue la primera película en la que baile cuando tenía 19 años. Fue grabada en Chicago.
Bionica: Se que eres de Chicago, pero que es lo que mas te gusta de estar en NY?
Lyrik Cruz: NY ha sido mi inspiración para convertirme en el artista que soy hoy en día. Mi corazón siempre estuvo aquí.
Bionica: Se que eres de Chicago, pero ¿qué tiene NY, que no tiene Chicago?
Lyrik Cruz: Me parece que NY es Chicago a otro nivel. Hay un gran sentido de comunidad en ambos lugares. Afortunadamente, mis padres están divorciados y pude vivir en las dos ciudades
Bionica: ¿Qué es lo que mas te ha gustado de haber trabajado en Shine?
Lyrik Cruz: Es un proyecto con mucho corazón. Sabes, tiene que ver con el genero del mambo, algo que ha sido una gran plataforma para mi como bailarín y coreógrafo alrededor del mundo. Le dije que sí hasta proyecto por que sentí que se lo debo a la música. Es algo en lo que creo. Es un tema muy importante, algo que esta ocurriendo tanto en NY como en Chicago y uno quiere ser parte de algo que tiene sentido.

Jorge Burgos también conocido como Ataca es actor & instructor de baile. Él y su compañera La Alemana han dejado su huella en el mundo bailando.

Jorge Burgos: Mi nombre es Jorge Burgos, hago el papel de Ralphy el hermano mayor que esta batallando contra su hermano menor. Básicamente somos los dos lados de ese plan en convertir los barrios humildes en algo mas. En esencia tiene que ver con dos hermanos que crecen, son los mejores bailarines de salsa en la ciudad. Algo que pasa y cada uno toma su propio camino. Yo llego a trabajar en administración de bienes raíces y ahí llega el tema de los cambios en el barrio. Mi hermano es un Robin Hood moderno que esta tratando de mantener la esencia del barrio. Desafortunadamente, yo soy parte de la compañía que quiere cambiar nuestro hogar completamente.
Bionica: ¿Tienes hermanos?
Jorge Burgos: Si. Cuando fui elegido para este papel, supe que era perfecto para mi ya que identificaba con varios temas de la película. Me pude conectar mejor con mi hermano en la película través de mis vivencias con mi hermano actual quien esta aquí hoy para ver la película.
Bionica: Ustedes deben de estar muy emocionados.
Jorge Burgos: De verdad que si. Me siento humildemente bendecido. Es lo mejor.
Bionica: ¿Y tu mamá, sabe sobre esta relación entre hermanos de la película? ¿Dijo algo sobre eso?
Jorge Burgos: Ella entendió que la relación entre mi hermano y yo fue un gran factor por el que fui elegido para este papel y ella esta sumamente orgullosa de sus hijos por eso.
Muchos de los ejercicios durante mi prueba para la película tuvieron que ver con mi hermano.
Es la primera vez que trabajo como actor. Estuve en el lugar indicado en el momento preciso.
Bionica: Que papel toca el baile en tu vida diaria?
Jorge Burgos: Me dedico al baile por completo. Tengo una compañía de baile y basicamente viajo el mundo todos los fines de semana como instructor de baile. Empecé con la salsa, pero mi enfoque es la bachata. Soy mas conocido por ella aunque aun bailo salsa. Tengo clases a traves del internet.
Bionica: ¿Cómo se puede enseñar a bailar través del internet?
Jorge Burgos: Bueno, básicamente te subscribes a nuestra pagina que es DanceEgg y ahí puedes ver vídeos en tu teléfono, tabla, computadora… que te muestran varias técnicas de baile y como hacerlas paso a paso.
Bionica: ¿Cuál es tu canción favorita de bachata?
Jorge Burgos: Uff, esa si que esta difícil. Hay muchísimas canciones buenas. Soy fan de Romeo Santos, Juan Luis Guerra…Me encantan esos que escriben una poesía–personas que tienen una combinación única en su música. Me gusta esa bachata urbana, moderna.
Bionica: ¿Tienes algún mensaje especial para Puerto Rico?
Jorge Burgos: Quiero que todos en Puerto Rico, especialmente mi familia con quien aun no me he podido comunicar, sepan que estamos con ustedes. Están en nuestros corazones, nuestros pensamientos, estamos aquí orando por ustedes. Los Latinos somos fuertes, los Boricuas somos fuertes. La película de hoy representa a todos los Latinos. Esto es de ustedes!

Gilbert Saldivar: Gilbert Saldivar. Hago el papel de Jr., el hermano menor en la película. El hermano que esta tratando de mantener la cultura en el barrio de East Harlem.
Bionica: Le pregunté al señor Burgos sobre su papel y me dijo que pudo identificarse con la relación con su hermano.
Gilbert Saldivar: Si.
Bionica: ¿Tienes un hermano?
Gilbert Saldivar: Tengo un hermano, pero en realidad ambos nos identificamos con el hermano de él por lo que él ha vivido. Sus vivencias fueron las mías en la película. Antes de empezar a grabar la película, hablamos con su hermano sobre sus experiencias y eso me ayudó mucho.
Bionica: ¿Qué es lo que mas te gusta de ser parte de una película en la que te expresas bailando?
Gilbert Saldivar: El simple hecho de poder actuar & bailar en una película tan importante es algo hermoso. El poder representar a los Latinos en Hollywood es aun mas importante. Es cierto que hay pruebas, pero eso nos hace mas fuerte.
Los Latinos somos guerreros, por eso estamos aquí–para enseñarle de que estamos hecho a esas personas que nos subestiman.
Bionica: ¿Cual sería la prueba mas difícil a la que te has enfrentado?
Gilbert Saldivar: Ir a las audiciones para un papel que representa los estereotipos de pandillero, narco… Nunca como un padre trabajador o un licenciado graduado. Pero con directores como Nardolillo, nos están representando mucho mejor.

El pasado viernes tuve el placer de ir al primer upfront de Latin Hollywood Films en el que se presentaron avances de diferentes programas escritos, dirigidos y producidos por el equipo multicultural The Fearless Team en el Centro de Conferencias Cherksaky/Davis en NY
Este gran equipo esta compuesto por  Kiki Melendez, Craig Moss, Sarkis Semerjyan, Arsen Pananyan, Julia Carias Linares, Evette Vargas, Chelsea Rendon & Rudy Mella quienes tienen raíces en la Republica Dominicana, Armenia, Mexico & la isla del encanto, Puerto Rico entre otros lugares

This past Friday I had the honor of assisting the first ever "Multicultural Television Sizzle Reel Upfront' by Latin Hollywood Films over at the Cherkasky/Davis Conference Center in NYC
A truly a wonderful way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
The unique event gave it's audience a sneak peak of reels and pilots
made by the Fearless Team which is made up by Kiki Melendez, Craig Moss, Sarkis Semerjyan, Arsen Pananyan, Julia Carias Linares, Evette Vargas, Chelsea Rendon and Rudy Mella. This multicultural team has roots all over the world including the Dominican Republic, Armenia, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
And their aim is bring light to entertainment that celebrates and embraces the culture and fusion of difference in our everyday lives.
Cambridge Catering provided some delicious hor d'oeuvres and Ron Barceló the excellent rum of the caribbean.

El pasado martes 12 de Mayo fue la decimocuarta celebración de tal grandeza en el Symphony Space Theatre de Manhattan donde 12 Latinos como el legendario futbolista David Villa, Lucinda Martinez executiva de HBO y el neurocirujano Dr. Rafael Ortiz entre otros fueron reconocidos por sus labores positivas en la comunidad.
April Hernandez Castillo & Luis D. Ortiz fueron los anfitriones de la noche en la cual los que asistieron pudieron disfrutar de la musica de Frankie Negron, Doñé y el violin de Lorenzo Laroc con la actuación especial de Espíritu Gitano junto a Barbara Martinez & Sol La Argentina.

And that is exactly what the Latin Trendsetter Awards celebrate
The achievements of wonderful people who share this wonderful bond
The 14th annual celebration of such greatness took place last Tuesday the 10 of May at the Symphony Space Theatre in NY where 12 Latino Trendsetters such as soccer legend David Villa, HBO executive Lucinda Martinez and neurosurgeon Dr. Rafael Ortiz among others were recognized for their astounding contributions to the arts, sports and community.
Hosted by April Hernandez Castillo & Luis D. Ortiz, guests at this event were able to enjoy music by Frankie Negron, Doñé and the sweet sounds of the violin as played by Lorenzo Laroc as well as performances by Epíritu Gitano which featured Barbara Martinez & Sol La Argentina.
All of this was made possible in part by New York Presbyterian Hospital, Inca Kola and CUNY who will be waiting for you next year for the 15th round of the Latin Trendsetter awards. You can visit Latin Trends for more information.

Latin Mix Awards In NYC

El pasado Julio, tuve el honor de ir a los premios Latin Mixx de Nueva York en el cual junto a un foro de DJs, se apremian personas que han dejado una huella en la industria musical, así como los artistas, empresarios, productores y DJs entre otros que influyen mucho en las tendencias musicales. Esto se llevo a cabo en Stage 48 donde se pudo disfrutar de la música freestyle en vivo de George Lamond, Judy Torres y K Seven quienes le presentaron el premio de gran logro a Sal Abbatiello–el hombre por la cual podemos disfrutar de la música hip-hop y freestyle! Aquí os dejo con algunas entrevistas...

This past July, I had the honor of attending the New York Latin Mixx Awards which along with a DJ forum, honors those that have made their special mark in the music industry such as artists, impresarios, producers, influencers and djs among others. It was hosted at Stage 48 where guests were able to enjoy a freestyle performance by George Lamond along with Judy Torres and K Seven who presented the Life Time Achievement award to Sal Abbatiello–the man responsible for hip-hop music and that good ol' freestyle dance! Some interviews below.

Su nombre es Sal Abbatiello y al descubrir ese sonido diferente hace unos años en las calles del Bronx, NY, él se convirtió en el papá de lo que es el hip-hop. Sal es el dueño de algunas de las discotecas mas cotizadas de la ciudad de Nueva York, como Disco Fever que fue parte de la película Krush Groove del 1985. De una y mil maneras, el Señor Abbatiello ha sido una de esas personas clave en influenciar la musica que escuchamos a diario.
His name is Sal Abbatiello and he just happens to be hip-hop's big poppa after finding the movement some time ago in the Bronx, NY. Owning some of the biggest night clubs in the city, including Disco Fever which was in the 1985 movie Krush Groove, Sal Abbatiello can't help it but be a fundamental piece in what shaped the music that we listen to today.

Bionica: Se puede decir que eres el primer presidente musical de lo que es la música hip-hop. Que fue lo que te inspiró en crear este genero/movimiento musical.
Sal Abbatiello: Bueno, yo soy del Bronx y fue allí donde nació el hip-hop. En el 1976, vi como Grand Master Flash estaba conectado a un bombillo y me dije 'seria mejor llevar esto para dentro (bajo un techo)'. Era algo para los jóvenes de la generación urbana y al llevarlo para dentro, se pudo exponer para todo el mundo por que ya en ese entonces la gente sabía que tenia un lugar donde lo podían ver todos los días. De ahí descubrí a Grand Master Flash, Run DMC, Russel Simmons, los Beastie Boys, Kurtis Blow…He sido muy bendecido y de ahí me conecté con la generación del Freestyle, antes conocida como Latin hip-hop. Eso fue algo que también descubrí en las calles con mi conocimiento del hip-hop, y todo fue en el Boogie Down.
Bionica: Y usted, también es músico?
Sal Abbatiello: He escrito y producido algunas canciones, pero mi enfoque es ser promotor de conciertos.
Bionica: Como se siente al recibir este premio? Es un gran honor.
Sal Abbatiello: Es muy probable que la música sea la mejor terapia del mundo. Y al recibir este premio de gran logro en mi vida, es mostrar el empeño y esfuerzo dedicado tanto a la gente como a la música.
 
Bionica: Cuál es un concejo que le da a todas esas personas empezando su carrera musical?
Sal Abbatiello: Enfoca te en la música que realmente te gusta y sigue la. Se le leal a tu genero musical. Estudia bien el arte, trata aprender a tocar algún instrumento, aprende a escribir, estudia ingeniería…y encuentra tu propósito. Tal vez no seas un productor pero puede ser que tu talento este en escribir o ser ingeniero. Hay muchas cosas que se pueden hacer en este negocio. Se trata en encontrar lo que es adecuado para ti.
Bionica: Cuál fue el reto que mas lo ayudó?
Sal Abbatiello: Presentarle esta música tan distinta al mundo, por que en aquel entonces todo era cantado. Luego llegaron estos muchachos que le estaban hablando al micrófono y la generación de antes que era Motown, Jazz, Frank Sinatra…ellos no lo consideraban música de verdad. Romper esa barrera al ellos hacer rap y que lo consideren como música, que ahora es uno de los géneros mas grandes del mundo–eso es algo. Creo que lo que ellos vieron en el hip-hop, fue que unía a todas las personas de un lugar. Era el único tipo de música en la cual el DJ podía hablar encima de la pista. Cuando él les pedía que alzaran las manos y que las movieran de lado a lado, eso hacia que todos lo que estuvieran allí se convirtieran en uno. En cambio antes tocaban una canción no había ese tipo de conexión con desconocidos. No había interacción entre el uno y el otro. Esta música te conectaba con todo aquel que estuviera ahí.

Guz-Pillz-Sal

Que es un trail blazer? Será el auto ese que es regio para conducir en todo tipo de terreno? No, bueno si, pero no en este caso. En este caso nos referimos a Gustavo Lopez, executivo de Universal Music Latin Entertainment, cuyo desempeño al llevar la música latina otro nivel, le galardonó este gran premio.
Tuve el placer de hablar un poco con Gustavo y esto fue lo que él dijo.

What exactly is a trail blazer? Is it that all terrain/weather vehicle that you can't be with out? No, well actually yes it is, just not in this case. In this case it happens to refer to Gustavo Lopez, the Universal Music Latin Entertainment exec whose efforts in taking latin music to the next level have earned him this award. I had the pleasure of chatting with Gus, and this is what he said…

Bionica: From what I understand, you used to work at a cd store.
Gustavo Lopez: Correct.
Bionica: And after working a while, if I'm not mistaken, you wanted to leave Universal and you were told "No, we're going to give you a record label to take care of." which goes to say that you know a little bit about something.
Gustavo Lopez:
Bionica: How did you feel when you were told "Look, this is yours. Do what ever you want with it.'?
Gustavo Lopez: You know, it was a very interesting moment in my career because it wasn't something that I was expecting, especially when you're unsure and have the doubt that you may not be able to do the same things as some of the big execs of the industry. I was only 32 years old at the time. It was an incredible challenge and an opportunity that I thank God for being able to make the most of it.
Bionica: What's the best tip or lesson that you've gotten from your experiences.
Gustavo Lopez: You have to keep trying and stay positive without going over anyone. When you have faith in what you believe and perservere, things will happen. Your mistakes and hardships in life are the things that will teach you to be better.
Bionica: How do you feel receiving the Trail Blazer award today?
Gustavo Lopez: You know, I have a lot of respect for DJs. I'm not a musician but I was a DJ at one point and not a very good one. I love this atmosphere, simply because I find that the DJs are the first to know about what's going on out there. For me, It's an honor and I've been supporting Latin Mixx ever since I learned about it 5 years ago. This is something that also makes me proud and I give the DJs all the credit. There are times where they're working someplace at 8 in the evening and they keep on going to 4 or 5 in the morning. It's a lot more work than what people might think.
